The standard we aim for
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We believe the site meets that standard. It hasn't yet been audited by an independent accessibility specialist, so please tell us about anything we've missed.
What we do
- Semantic HTML: one main heading per page, headings in order, landmarks, real links and buttons.
- A "Skip to content" link as the first thing on every page.
- A clearly visible focus indicator on every link, button and form field.
- Text and background colors with a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, and 3:1 for control borders and focus rings.
- A typeface, Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, designed by the Braille Institute for readers with low vision.
- Layouts that work at 320 pixels wide and when zoomed to 400%, with no horizontal scrolling for text.
- A dark theme that follows your device setting, and no animation if your device asks for reduced motion.
- No JavaScript of our own, except on the contrast checker, which still shows a result without it. Cloudflare adds its small, cookieless analytics script to each page; the site works without it.
- No pop-ups, auto-playing media or time limits.
How we test
- Every page is checked with axe-core automated tests before we publish a change.
- Every build checks for missing alt text, heading order, page titles, language and broken links.
- We test each page template using only a keyboard, and at 320 pixels wide.
Known limitations
- The color picker in the contrast checker is your browser's own control, and some browsers and screen readers handle it poorly. Each color also has a text field that accepts hex or RGB values.
- Links to other sites, such as the Shopify App Store and the W3C, lead to pages we don't control and that may have their own barriers.
Tell us about a barrier
If something on this site doesn't work for you, email contact@codeinspire.io. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do and, if you like, the browser and assistive technology you use. We aim to reply within 5 business days and to fix confirmed problems as quickly as we can.
Technical details
The site is built with HTML and CSS. Our only JavaScript is on the contrast checker; Cloudflare's analytics script is added at the edge. The site relies on no assistive-technology-specific workarounds.
